Altbough fewer Latin students read Caesar than they did a century ago, there is certainly a case for choosing De Bello Gallico as a first author after completing the grammar.  Caesar’s use of the language is excellent and not too difficult for intermediate students. Learners  can practice understanding syntax and applying knowledge of advanced grammar topics. 


Several in-print Latin series still focus on Caesar in the second year, especially the Grammar oriented textbooks: Latin for Americans, Jenney’s Latin, and Henle’s Latin (a favorite choice of homeschooling families) are most notable.  There are also some mythological series, like Fabulae Faciles, which retell the stories of heroes, written by 19th and 20th century writers emulating Caesar’s style.
